Event Description: The MCC Overbrook Art Gallery features a Norton Shores native and MCC alumnus with its exhibit “All You Need is An Allen Wrench: Collages by David Dodd Lee” from Sept. 22 through Oct. 31. A 30-year veteran poet, Lee just released his ninth book, “Animalities,” this month. But it’s his lifelong dedication to visual art, specifically through the medium of collage, which will be exhibited for the first time as a solo show in Overbrook Gallery. Containing fragments of his poetry, Lee’s collages are visceral in nature and often contain a surprising mix of high and low art references. His poetry books are organized sequentially with individual poems often based on recollected moments drawn chronologically from across the arc of his life. In this way, his work is linked to the Muskegon Area Arts and Humanities Festival (ahFest) and this year’s theme “About Time.” The writer Charles D’Ambrosio states that Lee’s poems are “vivid and vigilant, raw and urgent.” The same is true of Lee’s visual works. Lee currently teaches creative writing at Indiana University South Bend. He received his Master of Fine Art degree in creative writing and his Bachelor of Fine Art degree in painting from Western Michigan University. For more information, contact the MCC Arts and Humanities Department at (231) 777-0324.
