Event Description: Karl Marx comes back to life and launches into a passionate, funny and moving defense of his life and political ideas in Howard Zinn’s brilliant, timely play “Marx in Soho” on Friday, Oct. 24, at 7 p.m. in MCC’s Overbrook Theater. The play, which is free and open to the public, provides an excellent introduction to Marx’s life, his analysis of society, and his passion for radical change. Actor Bob Weick has portrayed Marx in more than 200 performances in various public and educational venues. He uses current news and events to show how Marx’s ideas still resonate today. Immediately following the performance, a panel discussion on the continuing relevance of Marx in the 21st Century will take place in the theater. Larry Reynolds of Central Michigan University will chair the discussion. Panelists include: Michael Burawoy, University of California-Berkeley; Elena Gapova, Western Michigan University; Bonnie Wright, Ferris State University; and Nicholas Budimir, MCC. The performance is part of the two-day Michigan Sociological Association annual conference, “Lives of Labor: Work and Labor in the 21st Century” on Friday-Saturday, Oct. 24-25, on the MCC campus. For more information on the conference, contact Budimir at 777-0620.
