Event Description: Presented by Frank Marczak, Associate Director of the USS Silversides Submarine Museum During WWII the United States Submarine Service suffered the highest percentage of human loss (over 20%) than any other branch of the US Military. Fifty two (52) submarines were lost and over 3500 men never returned home. Two submarines, the USS Silversides and the USS Flier were two boats that experienced survival and loss. The presentation describes the structure and living conditions aboard each submarine and tells the story about the many successes which the USS Silversides accomplished and the sad story about the loss of the USS Flier in 1944. Aboard the USS Flier was a man from Grand Haven who had recently graduated from the University of Michigan. Ensign Alvin Jacobson was one of eight men who survived the sinking of the USS Flier and he returned home to West Michigan to manage the company his father had established in 1919. His story will be described in words, video and pictures . Brought to you through the generosity of the Friends of Hackley Library.
