When Grief Goes Awry: Addressing the Complications of Bereavement . Please Note --> This is a Past Event!! . Date: 6/9/2016 Time: 9:00 AM TO 3:00 PM 6291 Harvey Street Norton Shores, Michigan 49441 Phone: 231.736.7270 Event Description: Overview Even though we all know it from our work with the dying and bereaved, grief sometimes gets awfully complicated! Individuals seem to get “stuck” in old patterns and don’t seem to make much progress in adjusting to the loss or they find unhealthy coping strategies such as narcotics or alcohol. These issues become particularly complex in families where there are children and teens. Family dysfunction and psychopathology--both during the final illness and in adjustment to death--contributes to an already difficult experience. Moreover, grief is often complicated by the death’s circumstances themselves, whether following a long debilitating illnesses or the suddenness of a fatal car crash. This workshop will help clinicians and other helpers hone skills in caring for bereaved people when grief becomes complicated. Objectives At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to... Use a communication model to better understand and communicate with others about “normal grief” Develop a care-giving strategy for meeting the needs of grieving adults and children Identify and address five core areas of disenfranchised loss Communicate how the resolution of normal grief becomes compromised by issues such as abuse, traumatic death, multiple losses, lack of supportive networks, and history of psychiatric diagnosis Apply and use proven, practical counseling strategies to assist a person in accomodating loss Agenda Thursday, June 9, 2016 8:30 AM - Registration 9:00 AM - Program begins 12:00 PM - Lunch provided 1:00 PM - Program resumes 3:30 PM - Program concludes Course Approvals This educational activity is awarded 5 contact hours of continuing education by Muskegon Community College Nursing Program Director.
