Can you paint like a pro or does most of it end up on the painter? Then USS LST 393 needs you. All of you. The veterans museum on board the historic warship moored at the Mart Dock in downtown Muskegon is having a three-day volunteer fix-up weekend April 15-17. “We have a lot of projects we need help with” said museum board President Scott Grant. “If you’re handy with tools or even if you’ve never had one in your hands, we could use your help.” The weekend is especially important in the wake of the damage done by a freak windstorm in December. Winds pushed the ship from its dock, snapping mooring cables and dragging the anchor of the 330-foot ship. It caused damage to walkways, plumbing, railings and the ship’s new “D-Day Gray” paint job. Grant said there are have several projects to work on from landscaping to building. Equipment will be supplied but anyone with their own tools will be gratefully welcomed. And anyone who would like to stay overnight is welcome. There is a large parking lot for RV’s and about a dozen bunks aboard ship to sleep in. The bathrooms and water aboard the ship should be functional by that time. LST 393 will provide rolls and coffee for breakfast and hot dogs for lunch for those working. Among the projects and skills needed are: • Welding • Landscaping • Painting • General cleanup • Carpentry • Metal working (bending, cutting) Anyone interested in helping for any part of the weekend or with questions can call Grant at (231) 740-3503.
