Event Description: How do we honor those who have served so valiantly? For those from Muskegon County who served in the Vietnam War, the art memorials are big and small. And they deserve a thorough review. They’ll get just that Monday, April 18, from 6-8 p.m. at Muskegon Community College when USS LST 393 Veterans Museum presents “Now is the Time to Remember the Past – Memorializing Our Vietnam Veterans.” The hosts of this college Center for Experiential Learning event are longtime college staff members Kurt Troutman and George Maniates. The seminar will take place in Room 1100 at the college and there is no admission charge. The featured speaker is art historian and MCC staffer Tim Norris, who will provide interpretive pictorials of Muskegon art monuments such as the “Final Approach” Vietnam War Memorial in Norton Shores’ Hidden Cove Park and the new “Vietnam Benches” at Memorial Park on Muskegon’s Causeway. He will also provide an explanatory discussion of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. This will be the first of three seminars sponsored by the museum focusing on the Vietnam War and its continuing impact on veterans. Seminars are scheduled for July and August onboard the ship. For more information about the seminars, contact Dan Weikel at 231-288-4012.
