Event Description: There will be everyone on board Muskegon’s USS LST 393 May 21 that you would have found in uniform on D-Day in 1944: Sailors, officers, marines, soldiers, nurses, Nazi soldiers … And pinups. But this time, real live ones. It’s all part of “D-Day Plus 72,” a community-wide commemoration of the sacrifices made by America’s heroes in World War II. The event is sponsored by Rolling Thunder Michigan Chapter 4 veterans support group and USS LST 393 Veterans Museum, a ship that was at Omaha Beach on D-Day 72 years ago for the invasion of Normandy. All proceeds benefit the museum. And while the event won’t take place on the exact anniversary of D-Day – June 6 – it will occur on Armed Forces Day, a date selected by the nation to honor all who serve and have served. The day will include a motorcycle “poker run” throughout the county that any vehicle is welcome to join. There will be an old car/motorcycle show, a National Guard encampment, a free kids zone area with games, veteran and military displays, local food vendors, free tours of LST 393, an aerial display by historic aircraft and a USO-style show. And did I mention pinups? “We’ve got a great scenic ride through the area, endless displays of America’s best, free museum tours and a whole tent full of fun for kids,” said David Johnson of Rolling Thunder. “It’ll be a great day for everyone in Muskegon.” The displays will be highlighted by demonstrations by up to 100 World War II reenactors, men and women dressed in authentic military uniforms of all services and carrying identical weapons. That will include a number of “enemies,” dressed and armed as Axis soldiers. And on display will be a number of World War II-era vehicles including halftracks, trucks and Jeeps. Also authentic will be the “Pinups for Patriots,” a national veterans support organization that will sponsor the “Muskegon D-Day Pinup Contest” at 3 p.m. on the ship. The women involved dress in 1940s high-style clothing, not bathing suits; the contest is “family friendly” because they emphasize beauty and authenticity. Any woman who would like to enter should go to pinupsforpatroits.com.
