HerStory of Animation: Disney & Beyond is a landmark exhibition showcasing the women who shaped animation history. This groundbreaking exhibition that redefines the history of animation by shining a long-overdue spotlight on the women animators behind classic Disney films. This first-of-its kind exhibition will be premiering May 28 through September 13 at the Muskegon Museum of Art in Muskegon, Michigan.
Spanning more than a century of innovation, from pre-cinematic storytelling traditions to the digital revolution, HerStory of Animation uncovers the essential role of the women who have shaped animation. Visitors will be able to explore production artwork, studio artifacts, rare imagery, and newly uncovered research that reveal the hidden contributions of women whose artistry has long been overlooked.
Among the many women animators featured are:
• Helena Smith Dayton - The earliest known woman animator.
• Lotte Reiniger -The legendary animator/director of the earliest surviving animated feature film.
• Mary Blair - The beloved concept artist behind Disney films such as Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, and Peter Pan.
• Lillian Schwartz – The visionary artist who brought animation into the digital age.
• Bessie Mae Kelley – The newly-discovered animator who worked for Bray, Fables and Fleischer Studios, creating the earliest-surviving hand drawn animated films directed by a woman.
The exhibition is curated by Mindy Johnson, award-winning author, historian, filmmaker, and educator. Johnson is a preeminent expert on women’s roles in animation and film history.

"Ships Stand Watch at the USS Silversides Submarine Museum" is a summer-long waterfront program featuring the visiting sailing vessel S/V Jakab while the WWII submarine USS Silversides undergoes essential dry dock preservation.

S/V Jakab offers public deck tours beginning in July and continuing through Labor Day in September.

Deck tours: Monday - Sunday
Sailing Excursions: Friday - Sunday

Deck Tours: ticket combines a guided deck tour of the S/V Jakab with unlimited same-day access to the USS Silversides Submarine Museum. Guests can join the hourly deck tour to explore the Jakab from top to bottom while also wandering the submarine museum exhibits at their own pace. The experience blends up-close sailing ship exploration with historical displays for a engaging maritime visit.

Sailing Excursion: Join a 90-minute day sailing excursion led by Captain Andrew aboard a 12-meter America’s Cup replica. Learn about the vessel’s design and racing heritage during an intimate educational cruise. With limited seating, the trip offers a close-up look at classic racing sailboat features and an opportunity to hear stories and insights from an experienced captain. Excursions run on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, making this a relaxed weekend activity for sailing enthusiasts and curious visitors alike.

More About "Ships Stand Watch:"

“This program reflects a long-standing maritime tradition,” said Veronica Campbell, Executive Director of the USS Silversides Submarine Museum. “When one vessel leaves station for care, another stands watch. S/V Jakab allows us to continue offering meaningful, hands-on maritime experiences while we preserve Silversides for future generations.”

S/V Jakab is a replica of a third-generation, 12-Meter class racing yacht, representing the type of vessels that competed in America’s Cup races from the mid-20th century. Unlike cargo vessels or traditional square-rigged ships, racing vessels like Jakab were designed for speed, efficiency, and the ability to sail effectively toward the wind.

The vessel is part of a notable design lineage, with sisterships that have been owned by figures including members of the Kennedy family and the Beach Boys. In addition, Jakab’s mast once belonged to former British Prime Minister Sir Edward Heath, an accomplished competitive sailor.

S/V Jakab is a United States Coast Guard–inspected vessel, licensed to carry up to 40 passengers, and will offer guided tours as well as optional sailing experiences throughout the summer. Deck tours will be available seven days a week, while sailing excursions and sunset sails will be offered on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Visitors will be able to explore the vessel, learn about sailing and maritime engineering, and experience Muskegon Lake from the water through day sails and evening sail opportunities.

The program coincides with USS Silversides’ first major dry dock preservation project in more than 50 years. During this time, the museum will remain open, continuing to offer exhibits, educational programming, and public access to maritime history.

Enjoy the inspirational story of Mary’s life and unique artistic style in a special screening of Mary Blair’s Pigments of Imagination (2025). Produced and edited in-house at The Walt Disney Family Museum, showcases works from the special exhibition, paired with corresponding, iconic Disney scenes. Narrated by animation historian Mindy Johnson, Mary Blair’s Pigments of Imagination includes interviews with Disney artists and experts, along with home video footage of Mary never previously shared with the public. SPARK! is a cultural program for people with early to mid-stage memory loss and their care partners. The program is designed to keep participants actively engaged in their communities by providing experiences that stimulate conversations, provide peer support, and inspire creativity through creative engagement, workshops, and programs. SPARK! at the MMA is facilitated by Nancy Armitage.
SPARK! programs are designed for families and care partners. Pre-registration required, limited spots available. The MMA is a wheelchair accessible location.

Cocktail Connect is an after hours take on the popular Coffee Connect. This is a structured networking event and offers participants an opportunity to learn about fellow Chamber members, build relationships, and explore a Chamber member business. Each event is hosted at a different location, providing a fresh environment every time. It’s an ideal way for Chamber members and business leaders to connect and network.

What to expect:

Cocktail Connect is a Leadership Education and Development (LEAD)-based event, allowing Chamber members to interact with one another and learn more about their businesses. Attendees are divided into small groups to discuss a specific topic, rotating three times to meet new people and engage in discussions on new topics.
