Since it first began as a sun-up to sun-down event held at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum in Grand Rapids, the event has grown to include multiple locations throughout the state.

Since 2022, local Scouting America Scout Troop 1053 has coordinated with the USS LST 393 Veteran's Museum to bring the 9/11 Community Day of Remembrance and Scout Salute here in Muskegon. The event features a continuous salute to the American flag by Scouts, Police and Firefighters, and Veterans that lasts the duration of the event. Past guest speakers have included state and local officials, including Attorney General Dana Nessel, Rep. Will Snyder, and Muskegon County Sheriff Michael Poulin.
