This collaborative effort brings together business and community leaders to support hands-on service projects that uplift our neighborhoods and drive positive change.

Whether you’re painting, planting, assembling care packages, or helping local nonprofits with spring clean-up, this is your chance to give back while connecting with others who care about creating a stronger Muskegon.

Here’s what to expect:

An afternoon of meaningful volunteer work
Networking with other Chamber members and community champions

All materials and supplies provided

Wrap-Up Celebration:

Material World: Ten Women, an invitational exhibition organized by the Muskegon Museum of Art, features women artists working with non-traditional materials or using traditional materials in non-traditional ways. The exhibition highlights the use of the physical characteristics of material and technique as a component of both visual and conceptual themes. Many of the works use found objects common to the everyday household, or bring elements from nature into inside spaces. Painting, sculpting, weaving, and assemblage merge in surprising ways throughout the show — crocheted metal wire is transformed into complex organic shapes, steel rod is welded into traditional vessel forms and animal shapes, paintings are cut apart and reassembled on the loom, birch bark becomes quilt-like in complex geometric arrangements, and quilts become soft sculptures and drawings, amidst many other approaches that surprise and delight. The participating artists are: Marcelyn Bennett-Carpenter, Boisali Biswas, Elizabeth Brandt, Kristin Casaletto, Kim Cridler, Nanci LaBret Einstein, Hattie Mendoza Lee, Anne Mondro, Mary Stoppert, and Susan Yamasaki.

For 44 years, Friends of Hackley Public Library has worked in partnership with the Library to champion the humanities through the Hackley Distinguished Lecture and Commendation for Service to the Humanities Awards. Every year, someone with ties to Muskegon, and who has distinguished themselves in the humanities, presents a lecture as a means to educate and engage the community.

Our 2026 Hackley Distinguished Lecture will be presented by Frank Bednarek. The title of his presentation is Bad Bunny, Snoop Dogg, & Martha Stewart: Why We Need Them. This talk will connect the challenges to our local cultural institutions with an assessment of our strengths and ways to support and defend our community’s cultural life and heritage.

The lecture will take place on Thursday, May 21, at 7 p.m., at the Muskegon Museum of Art, with a reception following at Hackley Public Library.

The event is free and open to the public.

Frank is a former Muskegon Administrator, Owner of Frank Bednarek Consulting Services, and Partner/Co-Owner of Hooker DeJong Architects & Engineers. He is also a dedicated patron of the arts. Among his many community involvements, Frank is currently Chair of the Muskegon Museum of Art (MMA) Trustees & Co-chair of its Capital Campaign. The MMA is a place where Frank’s immeasurable contribution of time and talent has had a regional and national impact.

Commendation for Service to the Humanities Awards will be presented to Don Crandall, Nancy Crandall, Kathy Evans, and Phyllis Wahlberg (in memoriam). Each of these individuals has made deep and lasting contributions to the humanities in Muskegon County, which will be celebrated at the event.

Friends is a 501(c)(3) organization established in 1973 to support Hackley Public Library. We also strive to stimulate interest in reading and literacy, help develop and promote the Library's services, and enhance the community's cultural life. Friends provides annual financial support for children and adult library programs, and has funded significant projects as stewards of the 130+ year old historic library building. Since its inception, Friends has invested over $1 million in Hackley Public Library.
